Windows 10 already runs on 900 million devices

2 min read

Windows 10, close to the billionth device milestone, has announced that the system now runs on more than 900 million active devices. The value was reported on Twitter by Yusuf Mehdi, head of the company’s Modern Life, Search and Devices Group division. Of course, this value covers not only PCs, but all Windows 10 devices, from Xbox, HoloLens, and Surface Hub models.

Mehdi pointed out that the list of devices running Windows 10 has expanded faster than ever in the past 12 months – although it has not yet been revealed, exactly how many devices. ZDNet, on the other hand, has a pretty good picture of the pace, as the page points out, with Microsoft talking about 800 million active Windows 10 devices in March this year, and a $ 700 million milestone last fall. The company also announced a year ago that half of the devices in an enterprise environment are already running Windows 10.

The upcoming end of support for Windows 7 is likely to have played a key role in improving willingness to switch: the system will lose support within a few months, January 14, 2020 – as the date progresses, the number of users upgrading to Windows 10 may well increase.

Although the rollout of Windows 10 has been improving over the past year, the results are apparently below Microsoft’s previous expectations. Three years ago, the Redmond giant talked about reaching its billionth milestone by mid-2018. This apparently failed, but the end of support for Windows 7 could give the company the boost it needs in the coming months. At the same pace, Thurrott estimates that the coveted billion-dollar value could be achieved by early next year.
