Defining a gamer keyboard

3 min read

A really good player can play with any keyboard, but that is not necessarily true. Unfortunately, the market has long been overshadowed by penniless, horrible-quality keyboards, but even more troublesome is that sometimes they ask for a lot of money for a poor keyboard. And why all this? Well, because they figured out that they had to paint the buttons in red and black, give it a loud name, and tweak it with a few extra chips to sell the otherwise awful product as a gamer tool. But what is a really useful feature of a keyboard besides being comfortable and the quality of the ingredients used?

Most of the time macros are highlighted, but it can be done right and wrong. Many keyboards do not provide software, just by pressing the right button, we can record macro-like commands on a specially selected button. The problem with this is that there is no timing, accuracy is also in question, we need to write down somewhere what the actual combination is, no profile management and we can list it. The software solution is not always perfect either: in many cases the macro is executed by the software supplied with the keyboard, ie when the button is pressed, the software intervenes and executes the pre-recorded keystroke. This can be good if the software is flawless, but if not, it will result in unnecessary delay and unreliable operation. Not to mention that quite a few cheap models come with limited software and no more important features than the macro.

We still cannot say that it is a preference and a big dilemma as to which one to choose: cheap membrane or expensive mechanical. At the height of $100 you can get quite good mechanical models, where you can usually choose the Cherry MX switches. They are colored (not visible because the switch is under the button), and depending on the type, the switching point and the mechanics are different. Many people swear by Red, which is very fast, so it’s ideal for games. The most widespread, however, is Brown, which is a bit softer, of medium value in all respects, making it ideal for work and play. Some say Brown is already quite quiet, but whoever hears it will not think so, though it is louder: the blue that speed typists love for imitating the tactical features of a classic typewriter.

Membrane technology is available on all cheap and mid-range keyboards, but they are not the same: high-quality membrane keyboards can be fast, durable and comfortable. Some manufacturers are also developing hybrid solutions, in which low-cost membrane technology has been improved with some mechanics. For example, a scissor-like opening and closing support is needed, which provides better tactile properties but is still not as expensive as a fully mechanical keyboard.

And these are just two important factors. In addition, there are countless useful extras that can throw a lot on a keyboard. For example, the option to disable Windows buttons is useful, and it is very important that an unlimited number of buttons are simultaneously sensed and processed by the keyboard controller chip. It is good to have the query as often as possible if you have a numeric part and a palm rest, and the backlight not only looks good, often very useful, even if we do not really look at the keyboard.
